Every month, Platform Scottsdale puts the spotlight on a member who’s doing incredible things in the world. We also just want to get to know everyone a little bit more! So without further ado, please meet Katie Peckham!
Tell us a bit about yourself:
I was a California girl up until 3 years ago, when we moved our family to Scottsdale from the Bay Area. When my husband’s job changed, we took a huge leap of faith and relocated, leaving family and friends, and our home of 20 years. But we LOVE Arizona!!! And it is now HOME!!! We love the people, the kindness, the slightly slower pace, the warmth in “winter” and the wonderful friends and connections we have made. My husband John and I have been married for 25 years, and have 4 amazing kids, ages 23, 20, 18 and 9. They all have beautiful hearts and tremendous gifts and we couldn’t be prouder of each of them.
What’s your favorite restaurant?
We are foodies! We love to share good food and wine with friends and family. I have tons of food allergies, but this doesn’t stop us from going out to our fav spots, and these wonderful places are so good to us, to me, and so accommodating! The ones that make the top of the list include: Dominick's, Eddie V’s, Sorso Wine Room (our attendance is a little too regular) and the Vig in Scottsdale.
How do you spend your free time?
I love hiking, skiing, paddle boarding and traveling with my family. I LOVE the ocean and spending time on the beach with friends in California. I also LOVE volunteering!!! I value time spent in the community, connecting with all kinds of people, building relationships, educating kids, spreading kindness, and making sure that I am always setting the best example for my kids.
What’s one of your fashion mistakes? What’s your favorite fashion staple?
Fashion mistake or staple? I am a flip-flop girl!!! They are my favorite staple. I wear them with everything!!! Is this a fashion mistake? Perhaps, but you can never really take the California out of the girl!
What’s your superpower?
I don’t think this is my superpower alone, but every gifted teacher I have ever met. Teaching children with learning differences is my superpower. Helping the child that so many have given up on, lifting them up, helping them shine, and seeing to it that their teachers and parents are support too, this is my passion, and I guess my superpower too!
What’s your favorite Platform Scottsdale memory?
There have been many wonderful Platform Scottsdale memories, but the first event I attended will always be my favorite. The first time I heard Meredith Hawkins talk about GIVE and serving the homeless, I knew this was the right place for me, and that a strong and lasting connection had been made.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
Advice for my 18 year old-self... Wow! Yes! Tons! I was a super shy kid, and an introvert (still an introvert), but as we grow we gain so much, learn so much from every experience we have, every person we meet. My advice to my shy former self, would be to always be open, to meet people where they are, to look at life with kindness and understanding for those around you. We never know what another person may be going through at any given moment, so best to listen, to give love and support, to try to walk a moment in their shoes, and to be the best friend that you too would like to have.
